Lugares que amamos: Hydra
Diary

Places we love: Hydra

I discovered Hydra Island last year with two of my best friends, and it was the most beautiful experience. It felt great to be on the island. I felt at peace, away from everything, but at the same time, I had the feeling of being in the right place. It was probably the sea, the people, the places. Everything was just perfect.

Hydra is a small island in Greece, an hour and a half from the great capital of Athens. This island was the residence of Leonard Cohen, Sophia Loren, and countless artists and bohemians who were enchanted by what their eyes saw.

A peculiar characteristic of this island is that there are no cars or motorcycles. On Hydra, there are mules and boats to get around; this makes it even more special.

The beaches can be reached on foot but there are some others Bisti and Agios Nikolaos that can only be reached by by boat or by boat taxi.

The day begins with a Fredo espresso at Isalos Cafe or Papagalos . Life on the island is simple; all the restaurants, cafes, and bars are located in the main harbor.

Explore local art and souvenir shops. Hydra is known for its art scene, and you can find paintings, ceramics, and more.

*tip: I have bought some very nice and comfortable linen pieces, I could say that my favorite linen pants are from there!

We booked a traditional Greek boat and toured the island until we reached a magical beach called “green beach.”

Since 2008, the Deste Foundation (formerly the old slaughterhouses) has hosted a different exhibition every year. In 2022, it hosted an exhibition by Jeff Koons called Apollo, referencing the Sun god in Greek mythology.

To end the day, the Hydronetta is simply the best place to have a drink and watch the sunset, or take a last dip!

Some places to visit in Hydra:

-The cool Mule: yogurt and gelato ice cream.

- Koutsikou : Clothes, souvenirs, beautiful objects.

-Amalour: The best bar on the island!

-Piato restaurant: The perfect spot to go to dinner.

-Leonard Cohen's bench: where Cohen used to sit, contemplate the sea and find inspiration.

-The Hydra Historical Museum: You can learn about its participation in the Greek War of Independence and explore a wide collection of artifacts

End.
